Freddie Mercury in the 70's: First attempt at a celebrity likeness

Hi everyone! I wanted to share my first try to do a celebrity portrait. I didn't do any tracing or anything (maybe I should have, looking at it now) but the sketch still looks so much better I think. It's probably because it was an immediate reaction and done with confidence since it's just a sketch and I wasn't afraid of failure. I spent hours on the face and ended it up messing it up. Anyway I still kinda like it especially the chest hair. Haha...

Watercolor on Emily Dickinson

I was reading Emily Dickinson's poem "Experiment to Me"

Experiment to me
Is every one I meet
If it contain a Kernel?
The Figure of a Nut

Presents upon a Tree
Equally plausibly,
But Meat within, is requisite
To Squirrels, and to Me.

So I did this experimental watercolor piece based on that.
There are some areas where the colors I used to make the
brown are dissolving into their own which I liked a lot.
It was probably because it's bad quality watercolor paint
but I think it worked well for this case.

Revering the Ancient Masters

This is influenced by the ancient designs from a land that is now called Turkey. To practice patience and master different media these designs are perfect for me. Starting in the Ottoman times (and even before that until now) these designs were used to ornament palaces, mosques, clothing, pottery etc. painted by masters of pigment making and painting. All hand painted all slightly different from each other becoming one perfect thing. I love going through them looking for new movements,motifs and combining different colors with the old ones. It gives me a sense of meditation and completeness.

Some of my classmates have seen me use the same idea in a very contemporary form of art in one of our classes last semester: The Munny project. So much fun.
